![]() Keep in mind that almost every weapon and item characteristic can be changed through crafting. They may have socket links that can be used to create devastating skill/support combos. It’s not uncommon to find yourself in a situation where you sell, store, or leave higher quality items behind because using them means losing a skill/support combination that is too powerful to give up.ĭon’t ignore low-level (white) loot drops just because they’re low level. Unique and rare items that your character can use are always valuable, but they may not be especially useful. Use and value can be two different things in Path of Exile. ![]() It won’t take long, however, before you’re leaving 90% of it on the ground and saving your inventory space for what’s useful or valuable. When you begin the game, you’ll pick up everything that drops to sell to vendors. Path of Exile inundates the player in torrents of loot. Once you start doing this, the socket links in weapons and armor can become more important than the modifiers on the items themselves. Check for the letters to make sure your support gems are having the effect you expect. If a support gem is modifying a skill, a small letter will appear in the corner of the skill’s icon on the skill bar.The types of skill gems supported are written in green below the (gray) line that indicates the support gem’s level. For example, a “Projectile” gem tag doesn’t mean that all skill gems that shoot projectiles are supported. The gem tags written in gray text at the top of the gem description are not reliable indicators of whether a support gem modifies a particular skill. Support gems modify some types of skills and not others. If two copies of the same skill gem are each modified by different support gems, you’ll have access to both versions of the skill on your skill bar (skill radial on a console). If two support gems of the same kind are linked to a skill gem, the support gem with the higher level will be used while the other is ignored. Support gems can combine as in the Split Arrow example, but they don’t stack. Here are some other things that are useful to know about support gems when you begin playing Path of Exile. As you can see, support gems can turn run-of-the-mill skill gems into powerful abilities. A Split Arrow gem modified by Combustion and Increased Critical Strikes support gems shoots arrows that add fire damage and have a higher critical strike probability. ![]() Likewise, a skill gem can be modified by more than one support gem. For example, in the image above, the green Volley Support gem adds two projectiles to both the green Caustic Arrow and blue Fireball gems. Skills can be mapped to the diamond buttons on a console controller by clicking the right stick when you’re not in your inventory.Ī configuration with one support gem modifying two skill gems. If an item holds more than one gem, setting one to Manual doesn’t affect the others.Īctive skills use Mana, and they can be used whether they’re socketed in weapons or armor. You can turn auto-leveling off by clicking on the gem and toggling Auto-level to Manual. There’s an easy way to prevent this from happening. The gem’s attribute requirement can rise above the character’s attribute level rendering the gem unusable. ![]() This can create a problem if you’re using gems from an attribute class that isn’t one of the attributes that defines your character class. A gem’s level and attribute requirements also rise when a gem levels. Gems level up and become more powerful as your character levels. This is especially true in the early game when a character’s starting-level attributes are sufficient to meet low-level gem requirements. Keep in mind that gems of any color can be useful for any character class. For example, the Dexterity and Intelligence-based Shadow will be offered an array of green (Dexterity) and blue (Intelligence) gems with a few red (Strength) gems thrown in for good measure. The gems offered by vendors and quest-reward givers are generally biased toward t he attributes that define the character classes. 'Path of Exile' Credit: Grinding Gear Games
